Each illustration begins with composition sketches - then I prepare, style, and photograph the food. These photographs are used as references for my digital painting technique. Sharply contrasted focal points and effective highlighting take the viewer's eye around and through each piece. What you don't see is the blue tape holding up the left onion half, the vegetable oil on the herbs to make them look "dewey," and the kitchen step ladder to make me tall enough to see through the viewfinder when the camera is on the tripod.
My original photo is on the right, and the digital painting is being worked at left. The front half of the onion isn't quite finished, and the garlic cloves and oregano are just a dream at this point. The software being used here is Corel Draw; but I often use Photoshop. My choice depends upon the desired effect of each project.
I think of each illustration as a still life. Food is so gorgeous....it deserves to be made into art.
